Just like a strong foundation is needed for a house, good dental hygiene is the cornerstone of one’s oral health. While brushing twice and flossing once a day is the minimum, it’s important to go beyond the basics. These simple tips will help one maintain a solid at-home oral hygiene routine.

Brush for Two Minutes Twice a Day

One may feel like they’re brushing too much, but people who brush regularly and thoroughly are more likely to have good oral health. A good way to ensure one is brushing for the full two minutes is to use a timer or smartphone app.

Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush and Fluoridated Toothpaste

This should be a no-brainer, but we should be using a toothbrush that is appropriate for the job. People need something with enough strength to get their teeth cleaned, but not so much that it damages their sensitive teeth and gums. As far as toothpaste goes, don’t go cheap—toothpastes must have fluoride! Also, avoid anything with abrasive chemicals that could damage the enamel over time.

Don’t Forget to Floss

Brushing twice a day is excellent, but it only gets about 60% of the surface of the teeth clean—meaning one is missing out on cleaning 40% of the plaque and bacteria buildup that could be hiding between them. That’s where flossing comes in: it reaches where a toothbrush can’t, removing food particles and plaque before they get trapped in the gums and cause an infection. Floss once daily or after every meal for best results.

Use Mouthwash Twice a Day

Mouthwash is another product that might not seem necessary but can actually help keep the whole body healthy by preventing mild infections from developing in the mouth. Use it twice daily to kill germs that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Limit Sugary Drinks and Foods

Bacteria in the mouth merge with sugars to produce acids that attack tooth enamel, leading to cavities. Limit between-meal snacks and don’t let children take sugary drinks (juice, soda) to bed with them at night.

Eat the Right Foods

There are plenty of foods that are unhealthy for one’s body and that are just as bad for their teeth. So, keep starchy snacks, candies, and sodas at bay. Instead, opt for crunchy fruits and vegetables (they stimulate saliva production), dairy products (calcium strengthens enamel), and water (it washes away sugar and bacteria).
